Keramat Sultan Iskandar Shah at Fort Canning

View all 4 photos...
Meaning "a sacred place" in Malay, a Keramat is the traditional burial ground of a revered leader. It is uncertain who was buried here, though some people believe this to be the resting-place of Raja Iskandar Syah, a ruler of Temasek. Malay traditions state that the first Malay king and his chief minister were also buried there.

Iskandar Syah was the last of the five kings who ruled Singapore during her golden age in the 14th century. Singapore was attacked by an enemy but Iskandar Syah escaped and founded another kingdom, Melaka (Malacca). Chinese records report that Iskandar Syah died around 1420, but do not tell us where he was buried

Fort Canning Park, Singapore

View all 16 photos...
Just a stone's throw away from one of the busiest shopping areas in Singapore is a cool, shady nature walk around a hill which has a history that goes back 700 years. Relax by taking a stroll through the park situated on the hill or immerse yourself in this tranquil green oasis while commuting from Orchard Road to the Civic District or the Singapore River.

Wall that tell a story.

Steeped in history, Fort Canning Hill was once known as "Forbidden Hill". This is because Malays in the 19th century believed that it was the seat of royalty for rulers of Temasek (or "Sea Town", an old name for Singapore) in the 1300s. Later, Singapore's colonial leaders made their residences there, and the hill became a military base during the Second World War. Today, ancient relics dating back to the 14th century have been unearthed and the Fort Gate, remnant of the fortress built in the 1860s, is a reminder of Singapore's colonial past.

Nine pound cannon

Archaeological research at Fort Canning began in 1984. Thousands of artifacts have since been uncovered, confirming the historical significance of Fort Canning even before the arrival of the British in 1819. Most likely an area used by palace craftsmen manufacturing items of glass and gold in the past, the Archaeological Dig showcases an actual archaeological excavation site, the only such exhibition in modern Singapore.

On Standy By Duty

My younger son who's doing his National Service with the Singapore Civil Defence Force was involved during the last day of APEC meeting recently. He has to be on standby while the dignitaries were at the Esplanade last Saturday, watching cultural shows, eating and just enjoying themselves. This is his pass to be there, security is very strict there, with the whole Esplanade cordoned off and not open to the public.

My son got to keep this pass as a momento, it has his photo in it. Of course since nothing happen, he wasn't activated for duty or even got a chance to rub shoulder with them. The whole night he was station nearby to the Esplanade and just shake legs till the wee hours.
