pangillan Baitullah..
|
|

Shocking news...
|
|
Straits Times date today, 14th November 2008
detailed pictures put together after interviewing witnesses.
From Singapore Straits Times online.
| Quote: |
A CLEANER at the Singapore Zoo who jumped into the white tiger enclosure yesterday was killed by the animals as a horrified crowd looked on helplessly.
Malaysian Nordin Montong, 32, was set upon by two of the three big cats in the enclosure at around noon.
According to eyewitnesses, Mr Nordin, who was seen shouting and flinging items about shortly before the incident, vaulted a low wall and landed in a moat in the enclosure, four metres below.
Carrying a yellow pail and a broom, he then crossed the 1.75m-deep moat, walked up to a rocky ledge near where the animals were and began agitating them by swinging the broom.
As two of the tigers approached him, he covered his head with the pail, lay down on the ground, and curled himself into a foetal position, two eyewitnesses, an Australian couple, told police. Their identities were withheld pending investigations.
In a flash, two of the extremely rare white tigers were on him. One took a swipe at him with its paw - which is about the size of a softball glove - and he began screaming in pain, said another eyewitness, Dutch tourist W. R. de Boer.
He said many in the crowd of 30 or so onlookers at the enclosure initially thought the intrusion was part of a show.
But when Mr Nordin began screaming, they reacted with horror.
'Some were screaming: 'Go away' to the tigers and others were shouting to scare the tigers,' he said.
The cries alerted zoo staff, and the alarm was raised.
About 20 keepers arrived within minutes. Some tried to prevent the attack from continuing by throwing brooms and dustbin covers, while the rest ushered the shocked onlookers away.
Also deployed were two zookeepers armed with rifles and live ammunition, but these were not used, said the zoo's assistant director of zoology, Mr Biswajit Guha.
Despite the efforts of the keepers, one tiger continued attacking Mr Nordin for several minutes, the zoo said in a statement yesterday.
It only relented after a door to the tigers' feeding area was opened. The animals retreated to it, leaving the cleaner motionless on the ground.
Once the tigers were in the feeding area, the door separating it from the rest of the enclosure was closed, and keepers were able to reach the cleaner.
It was too late, however. Mr Nordin, who hails from Sarawak, had been bitten on the neck and suffered a fractured skull. He died before police arrived.
His colleagues later told zoo staff that the contract worker, who had been working at the zoo for about 41/2 months, had been behaving strangely minutes before the incident.
He had thrown his cutters and meal coupons about before telling them in Malay: 'Goodbye, you won't be seeing me again.'
He then rode off on his bicycle.
The Australian tourists also said they saw him shouting and throwing some things as he walked by the crocodile exhibit, just 10 minutes from the tiger enclosure.
Yesterday's incident was the first time a person had been killed by an animal at the zoo since it opened in 1973.
Before this, the most serious incident occurred in 2001, when Chawang, a bull elephant, gored his keeper of 18 years, Mr Gopal Krishnan.
The keeper suffered fractured ribs and a punctured lung, and was in hospital for close to two months before he eventually recovered.
The zoo, which had to stop the tram ride and prevent visitors from entering during the incident, said yesterday that it would close the white tiger exhibit temporarily as a precautionary measure. It did not say how long the closure would last.
It said the tigers, which are nine years old and were brought in from Sumatra in 2001, would not be put down as they had acted naturally.

Whether it was a suicide or an accident, a precious life is already lost here. Deepest condolences to the family.
Event though the tigers have been with the zoo for several years, doesn’t make them any less dangerous. They may look docile but the inborn animal instinct to hunt and attack will surface when their enclosure is encroached. They are fed with pieces of meat thrown into the enclosure daily, and he probably thought the invading man as meal and attacked. That’s why there’s always a barrier between the humans and animals in the zoo, it’s for the safety of both and we just have to observed and abide by the boundaries and just take a look from a distance.
I was just there a few weeks ago , enjoying looking at the majestic animals from a far….
This zoo attack reminded me of the time a Singaporean was attacked by a tiger in Malacca Zoo donkey years ago, It was on displayed out of it’s cage/enclosure, chained to a pole where visitors came with close contact to have pictures taken with the animal. My whole family was there just a few days before the attack, but we chicken out and didn’t even want to come close to that animal.
The woman was walking toward the tiger to be photographed but she tripped and fell right in front of it , well the hunter instinct in the animal kicked in and it bit the woman’s neck, causing heavy blood loss and death soon follow.
Facts about Singapore zoo’s white tiger:
It has three white tigers, Omar, Winnie, and Jippie.
Earlier this year, 9-year-old Omar was short-listed as a possible contender to replace Ah Meng as the zoo's icon.
The 48-year-old orang utan died suddenly during breakfast on Feb 8.
When the zoo introduced boat rides last month, one of the four boats was named after Omar.
Only one white tiger exists out of every 10,000 normal orange-coloured tigers.
A report published by the World Wildlife Fund highlighted the possible extinction of tigers within a decade if inadequate conservation measures are not taken to protect the tigers.Presently there's only about 200 white tiger in captivity, they can grow to more than 3m from nose to tail tip, and weigh more than 250kg. The big cat has30 teeth, the longest one at 7.3cm .
The white tiger is not an albino, it has black stripes and blue eyes. Albinos has completely white coats and pink eyes.
They are fed beef, pork, mutton and chicken, each day 3-5 kg of meat are tossed in the public enclosure and additional 7kg of meat are given thrice weekly in the den.

When there's an exhibitions on vintage cars recently, I didn't pass on the oppurtunity to photographed them even when the family didn't want to tag along with me. Never mind about the that, I met another lady who went there on her own too, and we kind of keep each other company while photographing....

Bye Bye Balloon
|
|
Launched at a cost of S$2.5 million, the DHL Balloon was a joint venture by Aerophile Balloon Singapore Pte and Vertical Adventure Pte Ltd, and took one year to plan. The project was sponsored by global courier, freight and logistics company DHL, for which it gets exclusive advertising space on the balloon. The business partners involved in the project worked with the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Singapore Land Authority and Singapore Tourism Board to allow public advertising on the balloon, and arrange for the lease for the site at over S$1 million for two years] S$800,000 was spent priming the ground for the balloon, and another S$60,000 for the helium The DHL Balloon measures 22 metres in diameter, and is filled with 6,500 cubic metres of helium.
As the balloon was anchored to the ground with a metal cable, it only ascended and descended vertically. The DHL Balloon was approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore to ascend to a maximum altitude of 180 metres, or around 48 stories. Flights to either 150 metres or 180 metres are offered. It can accommodate a maximum of 29 passengers in its gondola.
The balloon, which flies between two to six times an hour, was operated by a pilot within the gondola. A hydro-electric winch system controls take-off and landing As a safety measure, the balloon was not flown when there is lightning, rain, or when the wind speed exceeded five knots on the ground, as measured by an anemometer, on location
On 19 April 2006, 40 crew members took 12 hours to inflate the French-made balloon, which took its first passengers in May 2006. The DHL Balloon was operated by Singapore Ducktours, a Singapore company which also offers city tours on its amphibious vehicles. As of September 2007, more than 150,000 people have ridden on the DHL Balloon, 70% of whom are tourists. Up to 1,000 people ride the balloon on weekends. Its ridership is the highest among all of Aerophile's balloons.
With the lease expired on August 2008 due to the plans for future new Bugis MRT station, the balloon relocated to Valencia, France on 3rd October 2008 for cleaning and servicing, and will probably make an appearance in another country. With the recent opening of the Singapore Flyer, this helium balloon has lost it’s appeal to the public.

I saw one of my neighbour had just bought a pot of yellow roses, I grabbed my camera and took a few shots without her knowledge. Well, her door is closed and she's probably not at home so why bother knocking , after all this is not the first time I took photos of her plant/flowers. Anyway the flowers are in public space at the common corridor so I didn't actually tresspassing.....neither did I steal or disturb the flowers....so kira ok lah tu, kan?
